The Story of my Digital Evolution.

I started out like a lot of other people I guess, School, Uni (before it was Uni) then out into the world of work and the wilderness, lost and wandering around wanting something more.

Well, after my degree in Fine Art as a painter and my lifelong passion for old creature ‘B’ movies and Fangoria/Cinefex magazine, I started to sculpt in clay, inspired by these and other movies of the day and my discovery of images BTS at Henson’s Creature Shop in London, in my head they were at the top of their game, I loved their style and this is what I was going to do, design the inhabitants of worlds only I could imagine…..

Skip forward marriage, kids and life, I was still sculpting but still for myself and a few friends, too shy and lacking confidence in myself to push my boundaries and not be afraid of rejection …… so much lost time and also not being involved in a world where I had an empty seat waiting for me (with a red cushion on it too).

I spent years working in water based clays and Chavant, Roma and Sculpey to name a few, I found it great but too slow to keep up with the constant feed of images going through my head, I think in images constantly and if you could see me you would notice my hands trying to visualise my thoughts into a solid object, it’s what I do. Anyway I found this thing called ZBrush, and I fell in love with it, but like all software it was financially unachievable in those days, so I would always download the 30 day trial whenever I had a new computer at home or work and spend my lunch breaks exploring this amazing thing, knowing I would lose it all in a months time.

So… time to purchase ZBrush and make the jump, and WOW what a jump, after the initial acclimatisation period, so much stuff came pouring out of my head, and it was all finished, and if it wasn’t, it didn’t matter, it was out and made digitally real, I put the pencils down and sketched in 3D from then on ….. the rest is history, my history anyway, but I’m making it all the same, making the things that do have a space in the world, and I’m sitting on my big soft red cushion, on my chair, and I’m saying thank you to all of you for pulling the chair away from the table and asking me to take a seat with you, you know who you are …..

I have spent 30 years in an engineering and design background, 20 of which were spent in a design office interpreting customers drawings into 2D layouts and 3D models and processing them for CNC punching and laser profile cutting and welding, producing in house drawings to aid in manufacture and construction. This discipline has made me a very conscientious worker with a strong ethic for accuracy and giving the customer what is required from the product on time and on budget - this ethos is being carried over into Big Red Moth and drives me onwards to a successful relationship with you.

3D Printing is quite good as well …..
